Agropolis International

Agropolis International

is an association based in Montpellier supported by the French government and local authorities. Its members include nearly 30 research centers and higher education establishments in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, with 2,300 scientists, working in the fields of agriculture, food, biodiversity and the environment, focusing on the Mediterranean and tropical regions.

As the leader of the consortium, Agropolis International benefits from the collective expertise of the French Scientific Committee on Desertification and hosts the Committee on its premises. The French Scientific Committee on Desertification (CSFD) includes 20 members from French universities and scientific institutions appointed by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research, and chosen to represent a wide range of expertise on desertification.

The Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES)

The Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) is one of the seven scientific institutes of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Its mission is to provide scientific and technical support to EU policies for the protection of the European and global environment.      

Located in Ispra, Italy, the IES carries out research to understand the complex interactions between human activity and the physical environment, and how to manage strategic resources (water, land, forests, food, minerals, etc.) in a more sustainable manner. Together with other JRC institutes, the IES provides the scientific basis for the conception, development, implementation and evaluation of EU policies that promote the greening of Europe and the global sustainable management of natural resources.

The Desertification Research Centre (NRD) is a research group of the University of Sassari, Sardinia, Italy, that promotes multidisciplinary research and studies on desertification and environmental degradation in the Mediterranean region.
